Sometimes I feel like an extremist.
Not in the political sense—just in the Peni tries to do everything at maximum intensity sense.
Like exercise. I go all out… until I can’t move, can’t think, and have to sit in one spot for hours, questioning every life choice I’ve ever made.
Or books. If I love a book, I drop everything. I ignore the world, the family, the dog, the laundry, and my basic need for food or water until I finish all 400 pages. It’s not obsession—it’s “literary commitment.”
And cooking?
Well, when I cook, I don’t make a meal.
Oh no.
I make five or six different recipes “just to try them,” then collapse in exhaustion and eat a bowl of cereal because tasting actual food would require lifting a fork.
So lately, I’ve been thinking about Yin and Yang. About balance. About that peaceful little symbol that whispers, “You know, you don’t have to do EVERYTHING at FULL SPEED.”
My dog knows this instinctively.
One minute he’s zooming around the yard like he’s training for the Puppy Olympics, and the next he’s snoring so loudly the windows rattle. Perfect balance. Honestly, the dog might be the most enlightened one in the household.
Meanwhile, my husband and I?
We missed that memo.
My brilliant husband can spot a problem three weeks before it even exists. He sees every possible thing that could go wrong. This makes him AMAZING at his job… but slightly less amazing when he’s applying that same problem-fixing energy to me.
And then there’s me—the eternal optimist.
The woman who assumes everything will go beautifully because… why wouldn’t it?
This worked great when I taught kindergarten. I saw what the kids did well and built on that, so they had the confidence to tackle trickier things.
At home?
Well, when a real problem pops up, “Peni Panic” tends to take over because I failed to anticipate anything going off the rails.
So yes—we both clearly need a little yin to our yang, a little balance between my sunshine and his storm clouds.
I’m going to work on my balance.
But knowing me, I’ll probably go at it full force and become extremely balanced.
Is that a thing?
I’ll let you know.
(And if I suddenly become calm, centered, and Zen-like… please check on me. Something is definitely wrong.)
