When Change Feels Like Bad News (But Isn’t)

Change is hard, especially when we think it’s a “bad” change.
We get comfortable with our routines, our familiar ways, and sometimes it’s tough to tell whether change is actually good or bad. I guess it all depends on perspective.

At my Silver Sneakers exercise class, I got an unexpected life lesson about dealing with change…”
Now, seniors are notoriously known for liking things just so—the same instructor, the same exercises, and most importantly, the same spot in the room.
But one morning, our instructor changed the whole layout. What?!
Suddenly, we didn’t have our familiar places anymore. Where was my buddy? How could I even see the instructor?
This was not good.
Or… was it?

With a little tweak in perspective, it turned out to be great.
There was more room to move around, and we got a chance to meet and talk with new people.
The “bad” change actually ended up being a good one.

Back when I taught kindergarten, the kids taught me plenty about coping with unexpected changes

One morning, a little girl came in with a glum expression on her face.
I asked what was wrong, and she said her mom had been to the doctor—and it wasn’t good.
My heart lurched. Was her mom seriously ill? I steeled myself, ready to be there for her no matter what.
“You don’t have to tell me,” I said gently. “But if you want to, I’m here to listen.”
She nodded and said, “No, Mrs. Clark, I need to tell you. It’s bad news, bad news.”
Bracing myself, I said, “Okay, sweetie. Go ahead.”

She took a deep breath.
“Well… Mom has to eat more fiber.”

What?!
Relieved, I smiled and said, “That’s not such bad news! Fiber can help keep your body healthy!”
But my little student wasn’t convinced.
“You don’t understand, Mrs. Clark. Mom said if she has to eat more fiber now, then we all have to eat more fiber! BAD NEWS!”

I tried not to laugh as I explained all the delicious foods that had fiber—berries, apples, whole-grain bread, etc.
She looked slightly more hopeful as she considered the possibility that this “bad news” might not be so terrible after all.

It’s funny how often life is like that.
At first, change can seem scary, uncomfortable, even wrong.
But with a little patience—and maybe a few berries—it might just turn out better than we expect.
