The Power of a Hand to Hold

I’ve been thinking a lot about the human touch lately—especially hand-holding.
There are so many reasons we reach for someone’s hand.

When I was little, my big sister and I held hands constantly—part safety, part comfort, and part, “I’ve got you and you’ve got me.” Even without words, that was our promise to each other. Two little girls walking through the world together.

As a teenager, I remember holding my first boyfriend’s hand. Oh, the thrill of it! My heart practically did somersaults. In that dramatic way only teenagers can manage, I felt seen and chosen and suddenly brave enough to take on absolutely everything.

Then came my years as a kindergarten teacher. I held so many tiny hands—warm, sticky, trusting. To the kids, holding the teacher’s hand meant status: front of the line, VIP access, maybe even bragging rights at lunch. To me, it was a way to say, without a single word, I care about you. You’re safe with me.

Most of the time, hand-holding is something we do with the people we love.

But this week, something different happened.

I was being rolled into (another!) surgery, and the operating room was full—eight people in scrubs, bright lights, unfamiliar sounds, and that unsettling kind of medical chatter that feels like code you’re not meant to understand. I was trying to breathe, to stay calm, to keep my nerves from breakdancing inside my chest.

And then… the oxygen mask.

Usually, they ease me into that step, but not this time. The mask was on before I was ready, and my body panicked before my brain could stop it. The claustrophobia hit hard. I tried to pull the mask away, but by then my arms were gently restrained. The tears came. Someone told me to “just relax,” which—as we all know—has never once relaxed a single human being.

And then…
A hand found mine.

It was the quiet, soft-spoken nurse who’d stood beside me earlier. She didn’t say a thing—she just slipped her hand into mine like it was the most natural thing in the world.

And I held on.

I squeezed her hand with everything I had, like she was my rope, my anchor, my lifeline. And instead of pulling away, she squeezed right back. Her squeeze said, I’m here. You’re safe. You’re not doing this alone.

It couldn’t have lasted more than five seconds before I drifted off completely.

But those five seconds felt holy.

It’s amazing how someone you’ve never met can step into a moment of fear and change everything—with nothing more than the steady warmth of their hand. No speeches. No pep talks. Just presence. Just kindness.

Sometimes that’s all any of us truly need.
One human being saying to another, even silently: I’ve got you.

And honestly?
Hospitals should really consider hiring professional hand-holders. They’d make an absolute fortune.
