Wild Neighbors & Life Lessons from the Backyard

I live in a rural area, and I love it. The trees, the quiet, the pond—it’s my little piece of heaven. But this past week? It was like living in a wildlife documentary, with a very dramatic cast of characters.

Let me introduce you to a few of my neighbors:

  • Duke & Dixie, our resident mallard ducks, have officially declared our pond their summer getaway. They now waddle all over the yard and driveway like they own the place.
  • Two turtles—Sunny & Peekaboo—have joined the pond party. They float around in lazy circles like they’re on vacation in a turtle-sized water park.
  • I ran into Mr. King, a very large eastern king snake, while grabbing firewood from the woodpile. He scared me half to death, but we respectfully nodded (well, I did) and went about our business. The next day, he was gone—but he left me a little (or rather a big) gift: a long snakeskin. Thanks for the souvenir?
  • Our local bear, Big Bubba, strolled through the yard again. This time, he came right up to the front door—probably wondering why no one invited him in for tea.
  • The wild turkeys stopped by to munch on insects and weeds. That is, until our dog, ZZ, scared them off with his “get off my lawn” bark. Watching those little turkey legs skedaddle is truly a sight.
  • I wasn’t thrilled when Nibbles the deer helped himself to my hostas. Apparently, deer read garden menus now.
  • Rascal the squirrel—equal parts gymnast and menace—taunted ZZ and our cat Cami by climbing on top of the sun porch roof, doing backflips and making faces. The nerve!
  • And don’t get me started about the hummingbird wars or the dive bombing hawks!

Yes, it’s been a week.

But you know me—I couldn’t let all that wildlife wisdom go to waste. I started thinking about what we humans can learn from my wild neighbors:

  • Be like Duke & Dixie—venture out of your comfort zone. You might find a better view.
  • Take a cue from Sunny & Peekaboo—float around aimlessly sometimes. You’ve earned it.
  • Don’t fear the things that scare you, like Mr. King. Feel the fear, give it a respectful nod, and keep going.
  • Don’t show up uninvited, like Big Bubba. It’s awkward for everyone.
  • Leave before you’ve worn out your welcome, like the turkeys (or at least before the dog barks).
  • Stay out of places where you’re not wanted—especially someone’s prize-winning hostas, Nibbles.
  • And don’t be a Rascal. Teasing might seem funny to you, but not to the dog and cat plotting your downfall from below.

So yes, this place may be wild. But it’s also wonderful—and full of lessons if you know where to look.

Now it’s time to mend the garden, thank the snake for his donation, and remind the local wildlife this isn’t an Airbnb.
