I love live performances. Plays, musicals, concerts—you name it, I’m there. There’s just something magical about watching a story unfold on stage, feeling the energy of a live band, or getting swept up in nostalgia.A few days ago, my husband and I went to see The Cher Show at our local theater. It was fantastic. The music was phenomenal, the actors were spot-on, and the whole experience took me on a trip down memory lane—back to the days of watching The Sonny & Cher Show as a kid.
But that’s not the only memory it stirred up.It reminded me of my very first crush. A musician. A legend. None other than Donny Osmond. If you’re too young to know who he is (gasp), just do yourself a favor and Google him. You might fall in love too.
I was 12 years old and absolutely certain I would marry him someday—if only I could meet him. Obviously, that never happened, but my devotion remained strong. Even after I grew up, moved on, and accepted that our wedding was not in the cards (his loss, really), I still loved that boy. There’s something about a first crush you never quite forget.
Fast forward nearly 50 years. For my 60th birthday, we took a trip out West to visit the Grand Canyon and other breathtaking national parks. Before heading home, we decided to spend one night in Las Vegas—you know, to see what all the hoopla was about. And guess who just happened to be performing that night?
DONNY. OSMOND.
Yes. My lifelong idol. The one and only. And my wonderful daughter, knowing my long-standing devotion, got us tickets. Finally, after decades of admiration from afar, I was going to see him in person.
I was beside myself. Our seats were close but not front row close. The golden tier—the magical few rows where Donny comes down before the show starts to shake hands—was just out of reach. But no big deal. At least I’d see him.
Then, it happened. He stepped onto the stage, the audience erupted in cheers, and he started making his way through the golden tier, shaking hands. And then… he kept coming.
Closer.
And closer.
Straight toward my row.
My mind raced: What if he suddenly turned around? What if this was my only chance?
There was no time for hesitation.
I leapt out of my seat, bolted down the aisle, grabbed him, and held on like my life depended on it.
One Mississippi.
Two Mississippi.
Three Mississippi.
Four Mississippi.
Five Mississippi.
I hugged Donny Osmond for a full Five Mississippis before I finally let go.
I wish I could say his face radiated pure love, but… it was more like pure shock. His eyes widened, and before I knew it, he was backing away—quickly—making a beeline for the stage.
But you know what? I did it.
I met my childhood idol. I fulfilled my adolescent dream. I lived my 12-year-old fantasy—even if it took nearly 50 years to happen.
Dreams do come true—you just might have to wait awhile.
