I live in New England, where snow and ice are like that clingy friend who never knows when to leave. I’m used to it—or at least I thought I was.
Take last week, for example. I was dropping off my dog at his “doggy daycare” so he could have a playdate while I actually got some work done without those relentless “play with me, please” puppy eyes boring into my soul. Anyway, I confidently stepped out of the car onto the icy parking lot and—BAM! Suddenly, I was starring in my very own slow-motion action sequence.
First, my bum hit the ice with a thud, then my shoulder, elbow, and finally my head. A full-on ice disaster, folks! As I lay there assessing the damage, I concluded I had a sore backside, a nicked elbow, and a truckload of bruised pride—but thankfully no need for an ER visit.
And that’s when my overactive imagination took the wheel.
“What if I’d cracked my head open? Or broken a hip? Needed full-body traction?” Yep, my brain dove headfirst down the rabbit hole of ‘What Ifs.’ I’m the kind of person who can leap from stubbed toe to life-threatening amputation in record time.
But wait—there was more!
“What if a car came barreling into the driveway, and my dog, ZZ, had to drag me to safety, Lassie-style? Would he know what to do? Would he even want to do it? What if someone caught my fall on video and it went viral? Would I become the poster child for poor winter footwear choices?
It’s amazing how quickly a simple tumble can become an epic saga in my mind.
But here’s the thing—I got back up. Slowly and with zero grace, but I did it.
And it got me thinking: the ‘What If’ game works both ways.
What if I stopped worrying so much and trusted myself a little more? What if I found gratitude instead of angst—for resilient bodies, kind strangers who help, and the ability to laugh at myself even in moments like these?
So I’m reminding myself to tread carefully—both on ice and in my thoughts.
And for you, too, in life’s slippery moments: shake off the fear, laugh at yourself, and find joy wherever you can.
Here’s hoping my next adventure involves fewer bruises and better footing—but knowing me, I wouldn’t bet on it!
