Unexpected Gifts

My husband and I have reached that stage in life where we are officially “hard to buy for.”
We don’t need more “stuff” — clothes, jewelry, gadgets (especially gadgets, because half the time we can’t figure out how to use them anyway). We’re happy with what we’ve got.

But, I’ll admit, there’s been one thing I’ve secretly been coveting for the past few years. Every December, I see it at Costco and think, “We dont need it… its a waste of money… its so silly…” But this year, my curiosity won out. I decided to surprise myself (and my husband) with an early Costco Christmas present.

What was it, you ask?

A wine advent calendar.

Yes, thats what I’ve been longing for all this time. I have no idea why, but hey — your heart wants what it wants!

Starting on December 1st, every evening we’d pop open a new half bottle of wine from somewhere around the globe. And let me tell you, I absolutely loved it. Before we sipped, we’d read about the wine’s origin, learn what foods paired best with it, and watch a delightfully cheesy one-minute video about it. Pure heaven.

The funky names, the adorable labels, and the exotic locations — it was like a nightly passport stamp for my taste buds.

Here are a few highlights:

  • A Pinot Noir from Bulgaria called “Right Hook.”
Whether you’re celebrating victory or seeking solace in defeat, let Right Hook Pinot Noir be your cornerman, ready to deliver a knockout performance with every pour.”
    How cool is that?
  • A Malbec from Argentina named “Mendoza Nights.”
Each sip takes you on a journey through the sultry nights of South America.”
Oh yes, please. I was more than ready for a journey to South America.
  • And a Sauvignon Blanc from California dubbed “A Seaworthy Tale.”
Savor the maritime allure in each sip, as this wine whispers tales of the sea with every glass. Raise your anchor and indulge in the journey of flavor that awaits within.”
Whispering tales of the sea? Don’t mind if I do.

Can you see why I was so smitten with this quirky advent calendar? It wasn’t just about the wine (although that was fantastic). It was an adventure, a little daily joy, and something fun to look forward to for 24 cozy evenings. A win-win-win.

Sometimes the most unexpected gifts are the best.
Follow your heart — even if it’s leading you to the wine aisle at Costco.
